Spartans Drop OT Heartbreaker to #2 Ranked LIU Post

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team fell to a 1-0 overtime defeat in an East Coast Conference battle at LIU Post. STAC fell to 8-3-4 overall and 3-2-4 in the ECC, while Post, ranked #2 in the nation, remained unbeaten at 13-0-1, 6-0-1.

Entering their final regular season game, the Spartans needed a win to secure a berth in the post-season tournament, with one of the most powerful squads in the nation waiting in their path. Defense ruled the first half as STAC completed the first 45 minutes with a 5-3 advantage in shots.

Post turned up the pressure after the break and Spartan netminder Jack Nicholson - who did not record a save in the first half - turned aside eight Pioneer shots to keep the game scoreless through regulation.

No strangers to tight contests, the Spartans finished regulation with the score tied for the seventh time in their last 10 games. With time winding down in the first overtime session, Jason Lampkin's flick found the head of Charlie Ledula, who netted his 15th goal of the season, sending STAC to defeat with just 18 seconds left in the first OT.

Despite losing just two of their nine conference games, STAC can now only watch and wait as their post-season fate is determined. The Spartans have non-conference games remaining with Bloomfield and Rensselear.
