Estevez' Overtime Tally Lifts STAC Men's Soccer to 2-1 Victory over St. Anselm

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team rallied to a 2-1 overtime victory over St. Anselm College in a non-conference game at Spartan Field. The Spartans, ranked #9 in the East in this week's National Soccer Coaches' Association poll, improved to 8-2-3, while St. A's dropped to 3-8-1.

Despite their struggles to date, it was the visitors who got on the board early, as Mark Ferguson put one home at the 4:56 mark to make the score 1-0. The Spartans would get a much needed break later in the half, when Brian Kinsella's shot was saved by Hawk netminder Helio Meirelles Neto, but the rebound found its way in for an own goal, tying the score.

As has been the trend in STAC games of late, 90 minutes was not enough to settle the score, as the Spartans headed to overtime for the fifth game in their last eight overall. They would improve their OT record to 2-0-3 when Chris Estevez struck quickly, with an assist from Ivan Dam after 2:40 of extra play sending the home faithful home happy.

St. Thomas Aquinas carried much of the play with an 18-7 shots advantage for the afternoon, with Cameron Turner making a pair of saves to earn his first victory of the season in net.

The Spartans return to East Coast Conference action in their final home game of the season this Wednesday, October 19. NYIT will visit Spartan Field in a game with major playoff implications, and STAC will also celebrate Senior Day in pregame festivities before the 4:30 pm kickoff.
