Spartans Take 3-1 Victory over AIC in Soccer Home Opener

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team captured a 3-1 victory over American International College in their 2017 home opener at Spartan Field. The Spartans have now won two of their last three games to improve to 2-2-0 on the season, with AIC dropping to 1-2-0.

STAC carried the play early but didn't get on the board until Luis Morales was taken down in the box and converted his penalty kick to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage at the 31:38 mark. Just over four minutes later, Alejandro Coyt-Orosco sent a corner kick into the area where Brad Neal was on the spot to convert and give the Spartans a 2-0 lead, which they carried into the halftime break.

AIC cut the deficit in half at 55:09 on Jake Durham's unassisted goal, but with time winding down, Nazariy Myniv took STAC's second penalty kick of the day and hit the net, sealing the deal at 84:58. Cameron Turner played the first half in the Spartans' net with Jack Nicholson in for the remainder, with Turner earning the win as the pair combined for six saves. STAC held a narrow 14-11 edge in shots for the game, while taking seven corners to the visitors' three.

Saturday's game was the first in a string of 6-of-7 at Spartan Field. That run continues next Saturday, September 16, when St. Thomas Aquinas hosts Daemen for the East Coast Conference opener. Double-header action starts at 11:00 am with the women's teams hitting the field, followed by the men's game starting at 2:00 pm.
