The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team dropped a 4-3 overtime decision in a non-contest battle with Nyack College at Spartan Field. STAC now stands at 3-11-1 on the season with Nyack improving to 2-12-2.
After Senior Day festivities got the afternoon started, the wild contest saw Javier Fernandez open the scoring for Nyack at 33:31, rocketing a shot off the crossbar and in from 20 yards out. Juan Pablo Vaera posted the equalizer at 40:50 as the teams hit intermission with a 1-1 tie.
Noah Levitt gave the Warriors a 2-1 edge at 62:14, but Jorge Mazariego once again tied the game at 74:53. Fernandez struck for his second of the day, seemingly giving the visitors the decisive goal at 81:34, but Sun Ming Cho took a feed from Mazariego and buried the tying tally at 83:51 to send the contest to overtime.
Neither team found the net in the first 10 minute overtime session, but Nyack wasted little time in the second OT as Fernandez streaked down the left side and blasted the game-winner - his third of the game - past a helpless Cameron Turner after just 12 seconds of action. Turner made nine saves in the STAC net as the Warriors finished the afternoon with a 20-14 shots advantage.
The Spartans are off until their season finale on Saturday, November 9, hosting Daemen College in an East Coast Conference showdown at 10:00 am at Spartan Field.
