Strong Start Propels STAC Men's Soccer to 3-1 Victory over Saint Michael's

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team struck for two first half goals and came out victorious against Saint Michael's College, by a 3-1 score on Sunday morning at Spartan Field in Sparkill. 

Jorge Umana had a standout game for the Spartans, picking up a goal and an assist in the contest.

STAC and Saint Mike's were knotted at 0-0 until Jorge Umana netted his first of the season on a free kick that ricocheted off of the far goal post and in behind the Purple Knights keeper Mathias Loft to make it a one goal advantage for the maroon and gold with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half. The Spartans would double their lead at 2-0 just before halftime on a Benjamin Lidh tally, with the assist from Umana off of a corner kick.

In the second half, Anthony Bolivar Sanchez would increase the lead to three for St. Thomas Aquinas as he would get off a shot, while falling down, that was blocked by the Purple Knights defense, proceed get back up and put his own rebound into the back of the net.

The lone Saint Michael's tally would come with just under 14 minutes remaining in the match, as Brock Martindale would score on a pass from teammate Kyle Brady to make it a 3-1 contest. However, the STAC defense would tighten things up the rest of the way and close the game out for their second straight win.

The Spartans out shot the Purple Knights 15-9.
