Men's Soccer Wraps Up 2022 Campaign, Beating D'Youville 3-1

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team closed its 2022 campaign, beating D'Youville University 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.

STAC wraps up its season at 6-6-4 overall and 2-3-3 in the ECC. Meanwhile, D'Youville finishes with a record of 1-13-0 and 0-8-0.

Prior to the contest, STAC honored its graduating senior class; Maxi Heuter, Paul Renaldo, Jose Tovar, Juan Pablo Cedeno Varea, Jan Fosterling Beltran, Dan Dougill, Jorge Umana, Ryan Collins and Anthony Bolivar Sanchez with on-field ceremonies, which included the athletes' families, teammates, coaches and college administrators.

How it Happened

  • Kevon Evans opened the scoring for the Spartans in the seventh minute when Yahir Hernandez made his way through the middle of the field and danced around several Saints defenders, finding Evans on his left side who sent a blast inside the right post, past keeper Ethan Picard to give STAC a 1-0 lead.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas doubled its advantage at 2-0 in the 19th minute, as Yahir Hernandez sent a feed in the air to a streaking Jorge Umana. Umana, on a partial breakaway, sent a shot past a sprawling Ethan Picard and to the back of the net.
  • STAC took the two-goal advantage to the halftime break, outshooting D'Youville 12-5 in the stanza.
  • Following the intermission, the visiting Saints would ratchet up the pressure in hopes of breaking the shutout. D'Youville would finally do just that in the 77th minute. Arthur Da Silva's boot toward the goal, deflected off of the hip of teammate Felipe Santos and past Spartan keeper Tabor McDaniels to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Trailing by only one, D'Youville continued to push to tie the game, earning several corner kick opportunities in the final 13 minutes. However, the STAC backend, led by Tabor McDaniels, came up strong and turned away the attack.
  • The Spartans tallied an insurance goal in the final seconds of the match, as off of a free kick, Kevin Carabali would find Kevon Evans wide open for a shot on net that would beat Picard to make it a 3-1 game and seal the victory.
