Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to four games, to start the season, by downing Caldwell University, 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
STAC remains perfect on the year, moving to 4-0-0, while Caldwell drops to 1-2-1.
Maziko Jiya tallied a pair of goals for the Spartans, while Kevon Evans scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Dalton Houser got his third straight start between the sticks for the maroon and gold and made four saves on five shots faced to push his record to 4-0-0.
For the visiting Cougars, Jakub Cielak scored late in the first half to break the shutout, while keeper Jose De Oliveira Curado (L, 0-2-0) made 10 saves on 13 shots in a losing effort.
How it Happened
12th Minute: A free kick by Rafael Capella sailed to the side of the net and was quickly corralled by Maziko Jiya, who blasted a shot to the top left corner of the onion bag, beating Jose De Oliveira Curado to make it 1-0 Spartans.
24th Minute: Mika Leue sent a through ball up the sideline to Maziko Jiya, who fired a shot past a sprawling De Oliveira Curado to the back of the net, to double the STAC advantage at 2-0.
36th Minute: Kevon Evans' team-leading seventh goal of the season came on a partial breakaway, when Rafael Capella sent the ball upfield to an open Evans, who went one-on-one with the Cougars keeper and put a shot into the net at the left post to push the hosts' lead to 3-0.
39th Minute: Caldwell broke the shutout on a rare offensive rush, as Ingebrigt Braenden put an initial shot on frame, which was saved by Spartans keeper Dalton Houser. However, Houser could not control the rebound and Jakub Cielak was able to find the ball and put it to the back of the net to cut the margin to 3-1.
