Spartans Double Up Cross-town Rivals Dominican, 4-2, To Remain Perfect

Blauvelt, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team continued its red-hot start to the 2024 season by doubling up their cross-town rivals Dominican University, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Sister Mary Eileen O'Brien Field.

STAC remains perfect on the year, moving to 3-0, while Dominican falls to 0-3.

The Spartans got their scoring from Francisco Degiorgi, Sebastian Ortega, Uhunoma Fredrick-Ilekhuoba and Kevon Evans. For Evans, he adds to his amazing early season totals, now with a team-leading six goals to go along with two assists. Dalton Houser got his second straight start (third game played) for the maroon and gold and made one save on three shots faced to push his record to 3-0-0.

For the host Chargers, Matheus Carneiro Xavier and Gaetan Mainaud tallied goals, with Joshua Kaandorp (L, 0-3-0) making nine saves on 13 shots in a losing effort.

How it Happened:

28th Minute: A series of passes in the offensive end of the field led to Kevon Evans sending a feed to the foot of Francisco Degiorgi for the blast past a diving Joshua Kaandorp to make it 1-0 STAC.

38th Minute: Off of a throw-in by the Spartans, Yahir Hernandez, Francisco Degiorgi and Sebastian Ortega led the charge up field with a series of passes through the Chargers defense, which led to Ortega slipping a shot boot under Kaandorp to give the maroon and gold a 2-0 advantage.

48th Minute: Matheus Carneiro Xavier netted a goal for the host Chargers off of a cross into the box by Gaetan Mainaud to cut the deficit to 2-1.

52nd Minute: Gaetan Mainaud tied the game for Dominican on a shot from outside box to knot the score at 2-2.

67th Minute: A turnover by Dominican keeper Joshua Kaandorp allowed the Spartans to charge back up field. An initial cross by Maziko Jiya to the foot of Kevon Evans was stopped by Kaandorp at the right post, but a loose rebound was soon put to the back of the net by Uhunoma Fredrick-Ilekhuoba to make it a 3-2 game.

75th Minute: STAC's insurance goal would come on a clear up the sideline on a through ball from Yahir Hernandez, which caused a two-on-one break with Kevon Evans firing a shot by keeper Kaandorp to increase the lead to 4-2.
