PHILADELPHIA, PA – The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's tennis team won their third consecutive match, defeating Philadelphia University 6-3. Returning to the friendly confines of Legacy Youth Tennis Center, the Spartans got off to a good start, winning at first and second doubles and heading into singles action with a 2-1 lead in the match.
The team of Javier Munoz '17 (Sevilla, Spaine) and Aaron Stahl '18 (Dusseldorf, Germany) won at first doubles, 8-1, while Andreu Ferragut '18 (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) and James Bruce '19 (London, England) won at second doubles, 8-4. Ferragut & Bruce are now 3-0 on the season in doubles play.
Stahl defeated Celso de Vera Rehberger 6-1, 6-3 at first singles to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. Munoz won again at second singles over Luis Molina Megias, 6-2, 7-5. After a quick first set, Munoz found himself down 4-0 in the second, but was able to battle back to get the win. Ferragut won the decisive game for the STAC win, defeating Vincent Breer at third singles 6-4, 6-2, and Roger Almato '19 (Vic, Spain) won at sixth singles over Juan Velosa 8-4. Bruce lost a grueling match fourth singles to Jacob Atri that saw both sets go to the tie breaker.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday, October 7 at West Chester University. WCU defeated STAC twice a season ago.
