MIDDLEBURY, CT – The St. Thomas Aquinas men’s tennis team came within mere 
points of upsetting East Region #9 Post University, losing 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.  
With the match tied at 4-4, the deciding point came down to the third set at #2 
singles, as Martin Munoz of Post defeated Javier Munoz ’17 (Sevilla, Spain) 2-6, 6-3, 
6-4.  The Battle of the East Region Munoz’s lasted almost two and a half hours, and 
featured heavy winds, dropping temperatures, and impending darkness.  

The Spartans came out of the gate hot, taking a 2-1 lead after doubles action.  
Munoz and Aaron Stahl ’18 (Dusseldorf, Germany) paired to win at first doubles, 8-
4, over Peter Fanous and Ludvig Henrikson.  Andreu Ferragut ’18 (Palma de 
Mallorca, Spain) and Roger Almato (Vic, Spain) defeated Nikola Crvelin and M. 
Munoz at second doubles 8-6.  

Heading into singles play, Post rattled off victories at first, fourth, and sixth 
singles to take a 4-2 lead for the host Eagles.  Stahl gave everything he had at the 
number one spot, but East Region #19 Crvelin prevailed 6-2, 6-2.  Crvelin has 
defeated East Region #1 and NCAA #28 Jui Mao of Concordia and East Region #13 
Charles Farres in recent matches. 

After winning the first set 6-2, Ferragut faced a 4-0 hole in the second, but 
won six straight games to take a point for the Spartans at third singles.  He has now 
won six consecutive singles matches. 

Almato got back on the winning track at the number five spot, winning 6-0, 7-
5, and Chris Jonas made a run at sixth singles, but fell 6-0, 6-3.  The Spartans are 
back in action on Friday, April 15 at UDC.  First serve is set for noon.
