St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis player Marcel Volz was named both the East Coast Conference Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year on Thursday morning, as the ECC revealed their annual awards, voted on by the conference's coaches. In addition, Head Coach Matt Capell was selected as the Coach of the Year, in a vote by his peers.

In his first season with the Spartans, Volz (Iffezheim, Germany) was the tops single player in the ECC. Volz went a perfect 5-0 in conference play, all at the No. 1 position. Overall, he has posted a 16-5 singles record with a 14-4 record in dual matches and a 2-1 mark at the ITA East Region Championship. Marcel has also contributed in doubles play, finishing with a 9-8 record on the year. 

In his fifth season at the helm of the STAC Men's Tennis program, Capell has led the Spartans to a 13-5 record, including a 4-1 mark in ECC play to earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ECC Championship. Coach Capell also has St. Thomas Aquinas on the cusp of their first-ever NCAA Championship selection, as the Spartans ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA East Region rankings.

Additionally, Volz was named a First Team All-Conference selection, and teammates Paul Voigt (So./Cologne, Germany) and Enej Hasicevic (Jr./Palma de Mallorca, Spain), were each named Second Team All-Conference selections.

Postseason play will open for the Spartans on Friday, April 26th at 2pm, when St. Thomas Aquinas takes on NYIT in the East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship Semifinal Round at host and top seed Queens College.
