Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis team ran its current win-streak to four matches with a 7-0 shutout victory over cross-town rival Dominican College on Thursday afternoon at the Riley Family Tennis Courts.
STAC improves to 14-7 on the strength of its fourth consecutive blanking, while Dominican drops to 5-7 on the year.
STAC opened the day, sweeping all three matchups in doubles play to secure the first team point. The duo of Valentin Baranyi and Julius Upel captured a 6-1 victory at No. 2, followed by the No. 3 pair of Odysseas Papaioannou and Tony Khamassi taking a 6-2 win. The top pairing of Eduard Simo and Ludovico Truffelli closed things out with a 6-4 triumph. Truffelli's victory sets a new program record for doubles victories in a season with 18.
Once the Spartans secured their initial point, there was no turning back. St. Thomas Aquinas jumped right into singles play, taking all six matches from the Chargers to secure their fourth straight shutout victory. Ludovico Truffelli picked up a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 4, followed by Lennart Lehmann's win 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. Eduard Simo posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1, with Odysseas Papaioannou taking the No. 3 match 6-3, 6-4. Ivan Laiz (6-3, 6-0) and Valentin Baranyi (6-3, 6-1) posted wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively to help sweep all of the individual contests.
