Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis team won its fifth straight match on Saturday, defeating the University of the District of Columbia by the score of 6-1, in the team's regular season finale at the Riley Family Tennis Courts.
STAC's victory moves their record to 15-7 overall and 4-2 in ECC play, setting a new program mark for wins in a season. Meanwhile UDC falls to 5-11 and 2-4.
Prior to the contest, STAC honored its graduating senior class; Eduard Simo, Valentin Baranyi and Odysseas Papaioannou with on-court ceremonies, which included their teammates, coaches and college administrators.
St. Thomas Aquinas opened the contest, taking all three doubles matches to pick up the first team point. Valentin Baranyi and Julius Upel scored a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 pair, the team of Tony Khamassi and Odysseas Papaioannou also took a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. Eduard Simo and Ludovico Truffelli ended doubles play, with a 7-6 (4) triumph at the No. 1 spot.
In singles action, the Spartans took five of the six contests to win the head-to-head matchup. Eduard Simo picked up a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 1, followed by Lennart Lehmann's 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. Odysseas Papaioannou posted a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 3, with Valentin Baranyi taking the No. 5 match 6-1, 6-0 and Julius Upel closed things out at No. 6, with a 6-2, 6-1 win. The Spartan's only blemish came at the No. 4 position in a 6-2, 7-5 setback for Ivan Laiz.
