Sparkill, N.Y. – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis team defeated Jefferson University, 4-3 in a non-conference fall match on Wednesday afternoon at the Riley Family Tennis Courts in Sparkill.
The Spartans took the valuable doubles point from the Rams on the strength of victories by the teams of Ivan Laiz & Valentin Baranyi 6-2 and Max Kendler & Slobodan Cejovic 6-2.
St. Thomas Aquinas went on to grab the first singles point with a win at No. 4 (Ludvico Truffelli 6-4, 6-0), to take a 2-0 lead. However, the visitors would rack up consecutive wins at No. 3 (Enrique Soto 6-4, 6-3), 1 (Mario Antonio 6-3, 6-2) and 2 (Hannibal Borg 7-5, 6-3) to take a 3-2 advantage. Ivan Laiz would then even the score at three victories apiece on a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. The match came down to the wire, as Valentin Baranyi would clinch victory for his team with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the No. 6 position.
