Garden City, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis team overcame both a mid-match solar eclipse and a gritty Adelphi University squad on Monday, to hand the host Panthers their first East Region loss of the season, a 5-2 road decision on Long Island.
STAC improves to 8-6 on the season, while Adelphi slips to 8-4 on the year.
STAC opened the contest, taking the doubles point from the Panthers on the strength of victories in #3 doubles, with Henry Ronnberg & Seth Newman defeating Viktor Hockl & Thiago Negrao, 6-2 and the then #2 doubles team of Don Vinz Lominoque & Nathan Yacar beating Hugo Munoz Reinoso & Reece Farrow, 6-4. The #1 doubles pair of Marko Jovanovic & Thomas Horsley slipped past Ludovico Truffelli & Ondrej Sramek, 7-5 to prevent a clean sweep by the maroon and gold.
When the teams opened singles action, #3 Ondrej Sramek gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Casey Recci. Adelphi's Viktor Hockl cut the deficit to one with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at the #2 position over Ludovico Truffelli. #4 Seth Newman and #5 Henry Ronnberg then registered back-to-back triumphs to secure the team's eighth win in 14 tries. Newman beat Hugo Munoz Reinoso 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Ronnberg dispatched Thomas Horsley 6-0, 6-1. The sides each added an additional victory to close the day, as #1 Marko Jovanovic downed Don Vinz Lominoque 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, followed by #6 Alberto Espinosa Navarro besting Thiago Negrao 6-3, 6-0.
