Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis team battled both its crosstown rival Dominican University and mother nature on Sunday morning, and came out on the winning side by defeating the Chargers 4-0 in a rain-shortened affair at the Riley Family Tennis Courts.
STAC improves to 10-6 on the season, while Dominican slips to 1-6.
The Spartans opened the match, sweeping all three doubles bouts to take the first team point of the day. No. 1 Ondrej Sramek & Ludovico Truffelli shut out Leonhard Fleisch & John Bruno, 6-1 followed by No. 2 Nathan Yacar & Don Vinz Lominoque besting Ali Zizi & Qalib Bahadurali Ladhani, 6-3. No. 3 Seth Newman & Henry Ronnberg completed the blanking with another 6-3 victory over Jorge Catala & Ander Cantero Sadaba.
When the teams turned to singles action, the maroon and gold made quick work of the Chargers before the heavens opened. No. 4 Alberto Espinosa Navarro downed Leonhard Fleisch 6-0, 6-1, No. 1 Don Vinz Lominoque dispatched Jorge Catala 6-1, 6-1 and No. 3 Henry Ronnberg beat Qalib Bahadurali Ladhani 6-2, 6-1. With the match secured for STAC and rain falling, it was decided that the contest would come to an end in an abundance of safety for the collegiate competitors.
