
Orlando, Fla. – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis returned to action on Thursday, facing off with Northeast, Division I opponents Fairfield University under the lights at the Lake Cane Tennis Center. Despite taking two of three doubles matches from the Stags, STAC dropped four of six singles bouts en route to a 4-3 setback.
STAC falls to 7-3 overall on the year, while Fairfield moves to 3-5.
The Spartans opened the match, taking two of three doubles bouts from the Stags. Will O'Brien & Kostas Kollias put Fairfield on the right path by defeating Seth Newman and Henry Ronnberg, 6-2 at No. 1. However, STAC would respond with two straight triumphs via No. 2 Erik Victor Tauson & Ondrej Sramek over Andrew Immink & Sam Hodges, 6-3 and No. 3 Nagamitsu Kuroda & Don Vinz Lominoque besting Alex Aguiar & Zach Whittington, 7-6 (8-6).
Once the focus shifted to singles competition, it was Fairfield who would surge with four of six victories to clinch the day's events. No. 4 Domagoj Stabek beat out Erik Victor Tauson 6-0, 6-4, No. 2 Jessett Calum defeated Don Vinz Lominoque 6-4, 6-3 and No. 1 Sam Hodges was victorious over Seth Newman 6-2, 6-4. No. 6 Henry Ronnberg took down Andrew Immink 6-3, 6-3 to keep hope alive for STAC. However, the Stags slammed the window down on the hands of the maroon and gold with No. 5 Alex Aguiar beating Ondrej Sramek 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to win the match. No. 3 Lorenzo Meschini bested Kostas Kollias in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5) to narrow the deficit and loss for the Spartans to 4-3.
