
Orlando, Fla. - After a day off due to inclement weather, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis team returned to action on Tuesday, as the Spartans edged out Hampton University, 4-3 at the USTA National Campus.
STAC improves to 7-2 on the season, while Hampton slips to 2-6.
STAC opened the contest a little different, playing their singles matches first. The Spartans went up 1-0, as No. 5 Ondrej Sramek beat Aryan Arora 6-1, 6-2 before Hampton's Benedict Badza tied things at 1-1 with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Erik Victor Tauson at No. 4. St. Thomas Aquinas would then go back up 2-1, as No. 6 Alberto Espinosa Navarro scored a victory over Marko Stoilkovski 7-5, 6-1. Kevin Jorquera put the Pirates in a good position with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Nagamitsu Kuroda at No. 3 to even things at 2-2. However, the maroon and gold would slam the door shut on their opponents, picking up a pair of victories to take the match. No. 2 Don Vinz Lominoque made it 3-2 on the strength of a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win against Yanozie Amadike followed by No. 1 Seth Newman besting Donte Armbrister 7-6 (5), 6-3 to close things out at 4-2.
Once the teams moved to doubles action, the Spartans dropped two of three matchups, with the Pirates' Benjamin Mwanza & Jude Killikelly downing Ondrej Sramek & Erik Victor Tauson, 6-3 at No. 3, followed by Benedict Badza & Yanozie Amadike beating Don Vinz Lominoque & Nathan Yacar, 6-3 at No. 2 to narrow the deficit and defeat to 4-3. The Spartans staved off a clean sweep with No. 1 Seth Newman & ECC Player of the Week Henry Ronnberg besting Kevin Jorquera & Aryan Arora 7-6 (10-8).
