The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team picked up a 7-3 win over Molloy College on Sunday afternoon. Samantha McDonald's lead off home run sparked the Spartan offense which scored runs in 5 out of 6 innings. Brittany Mangan went 4-for-7 for the day with a run and 4 RBI highlighted by a 3 RBI triple in game one, driving in all three of STAC's runs.
In game one, the Spartans trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the 6th. Danieele DiModugno and Brittany Malloy each singled. Kim Nowak reached on an error and advanced the runners to load the bases. Mangan's blast with two outs drove home three runs and tied the game. The Lions responded with three more runs in the 7th and secured the win.
In the second game of the day, McDonald lead off with her 7th home run of the season. Mangan hit an RBI single to score Nowak who reached on an error giving STAC a 2-0 lead. The second inning Colleen Pagnani lead off with a walk and McDonald singled. RBI singles from DiModguno and Nowak scored two more runs for the Spartans. Another single from McDonald in the third inning scored Pagnani and gave STAC a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans defense was flawless through 4 innings. The Lions scored 3 runs on 3 hits in the top of the 5th but the Spartans responded with another run in the bottom of the inning. An RBI single from Nowak in the bottom of the 6th helped secure the win for STAC. Brittany Malloy picked up the win on the mound for the Spartans.
STAC will play at Dowling on Tuesday afternoon.
