The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team lost to Mercy College, 2-1 and 5-3. Senior Colleen Pagnani went 1-for-2 scoring STAC's lone run in game one. Pagnani was honored in a brief pre-game ceremony for all of her hard work and dedication to the Spartan softball team.
In game one, Pagnani's double in the 5th inning set the stage for Danielle DiModugno's RBI single to tie things at 1-1. The Spartans gave up a run in the 7th inning and Mercy held on for the win. Julie Sosnicki had six strike outs in the loss.
In game two, the Maverick used a 2-run 2nd inning to get on the scoreboard. Freshmen Erin McCarthy homered in the bottom of the inning to bring STAC within one. The Mavericks added another run in the third to extend their lead back to two. Samantha McDonald hit her 9th home run of the season in the bottom of the 3rd, to make the score 3-2. Mercy added two more runs in the 6th inning giving the Mavericks a 5-2 lead.
The Spartans were able to add another run off an RBI from Julie Sosnicki in the bottom of the 6th but it was not enough to close the gap. Brittany Malloy took the loss on the mound and had three strike outs.
The Spartans will travel to Bridgeport on Saturday to conclude their season.
