Late Runs Lift Mavericks Over the Spartans

The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team lost to Mercy College, 3-2 in 9 innings and 5-3 in the second game.  

The Spartans scored their two runs early in the game with the first one coming off an RBI single from Amanda Leone in the top of the first.  Leone scored Kelcy McGeehan who had reached on a fielder's choice.  Leone had her second RBI of the game off a sac fly to score Brittany Malloy, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.  

The Maverick's added a run in the bottom of the third off a triple from Janelle Wade and another run in the bottom of the fourth.  Both teams remained tied down the stretch forcing extra innings. Joelle Salisbury's single with a runner on third and one out scored the game winning run for the Mavericks in the bottom of the ninth.  Julie Sosnicki went the distance for the Spartans, picking up the loss with three strike outs through 8.1 innings.  

In game two, the Spartans got on the board again in the top of the first as Nikolette Nevola lead off with a double.  Danielle DiModugno brought Nevola home with her RBI single to right center.  The Maverick's evened things up in the bottom of the inning off a home run from Malina Gilaga.  

In the top of the fifth the Spartans loaded the bases with singles from Nevola and Leone. McGeehan reached on a fielder's choice.  Malloy drew a walk in her at bat scoring Nevola and giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead.  

Mercy added two runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a 3-2 lead going into the final inning.  STAC responded with an RBI double from Malloy to score Monica Tran and even things up a three apiece.  

The Maverick's Salisbury struck again in the bottom of the 7th, hitting a game winning 2 run home run to lift Mercy to victory.  Briana Keaveney took the loss on the mound for the Spartans.

STAC will return to action on Monday when the host Felician College for a 2:30 p.m. double header.
