Spartans Continue Strong Hitting with 12-2 & 4-3 Wins Over Queens

The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team edged Queens College 4-3 in game one before beating them 12-2 in five innings in game two.  Nikolette Nevola went 4-for-7 with four RBI and one run for the day while Kelcy McGeehan went 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs.  

The Spartans took a one run lead in the bottom of the 4th inning off an RBI single from Caitlyn Francoeur, scoring Amanda Leone.  The Knights struck back off a 2-run home run from Toni Marie Valeriano to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the 5th.  Back to back RBI singles from Leone and Nikolette Nevola gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead after five.  STAC was in position to secure the win with two outs in the 7th when the Knights rallied a run to tie the game off a RBI triple by Stevianne Ognibene.  

STAC responded in the bottom of the inning as Brittany Malloy lead off with a single.  Wtih two outs, Leone singled to move Malloy in to scoring position.  Nevola singled with two on and Malloy scored the game winning run.  Julie Sosnicki earned the win on the mound for the Spartans.  

In the second game, the Spartans wasted no time opening with a three run 1st inning, highlighted by a 2-RBI single from Nevola.  Queens answered added two runs in the top of the 2nd to close within one, 3-2.  STAC's Briana Keaveney singled with two outs and was brought home by a Malloy double.  Danielle DiModugno followed with a double to score Malloy and give STAC a 5-2 lead.  

Francoeur homered in the third to extend the Spartans lead to, 6-2.  In the bottom of the 4th inning the Spartans had three hits and used two errors by the Knights to score six runs and give themselves a 12-2 lead.  The Spartan defense held the Knights scoreless in the top of the 5th and ended the game on the ten run lead Mercy rule for the first time this season.  

Keaveney picked up her sixth win of the season with four strike outs through five innings.  

The Spartans will return to action on Thursday when they travel to play Molloy College for a double header starting at 3:00 p.m.
