Spartans Split with Purple Knights

The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team lost to the University of Bridgeport, 6-3 in game one on Friday afternoon before picking up a 1-0 victory in game two.  Kelcy McGeehan went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run in game one.   Amanda Schweitzer's homer gives Spartans the win in game two.  

The Purple Knights got off to a strong start with a 3-run home run from Meghan O'Leary in the opening inning to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.  

Kelcy McGeehan had a 2-RBI double in the bottom of the 3rd to put the Spartans on the scoreboard and bring them within one.  McGeehan came up big again in the bottom of the 5th with a solo home run to tie the game.  McGeehan went 2-for-3 with 3-RBI and a run.  Briana Keaveney and Valerie Winalski each had a hit and a run for the Spartans.  

Bridgeport was able to break the tie when Ashey Hessler scored off an error.  Kamryn Beach added another run when she stole home.  Allison Luzzi added some insurance for the guests with a solo home run in the top of the 7th.  

Julie Sosnicki yielded 8 hits and had four strike outs on the mound for the Spartans.

In game two, Amanda Schweitzer hit a solo home run scoring the only run of the game and lifting the Spartans to a 1-0 victory.  Colleen Borum yielded five hits and had one strike out in the win on the mound. 

The Spartans will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Queens College for a noon double header.
