Spartans Split with Chargers in Season Opener

The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team won their first game of the season with a 5-0 shutout at the University of New Haven.  The Spartans fell 3-2 in the second game of the double header.  

The Spartans had 13 hits in game one and used a three run 2nd inning to take an early lead. Amanda Leone's 2-RBI single to left field to score Briana Keaveney and Me'-Lani Kendle.  Monica Tran singled and was brought home by Amanda Schweitzer to score the first run of the game.  

A series of wild pitches helped the Spartans secure two more runs in the 4th inning.  Caitlyn Francoeur was walked with bases loaded to bring Ashley Landolina home.  Schweitzer had singled early in the inning and scored on a wild pitch.  

Julie Sosnicki had six strike outs in the shutout win.  

In game two, the Spartans got on the scoreboard first after Leone led off with a double and was brought home by a RBI single from Kelcy McGeehan.  The Chargers scored a run in the bottom of the inning to even things out.  The host added two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 3-1 lead.  

The Spartans tried to rally off an RBI single from Danielle DiModugno scoring Schweitzer; but they were unable to close the gap.  

Colleen Borum had the loss on the mound for the Spartans.  

STAC will travel to Clermont, FL where they will play ten games before returning back to NY.
