Spartan Softball Drops Regular Season Finale at NYIT, Opens ECC Tournament Play at Bridgeport Wednesday

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball team closed out its regular season by honoring its eight seniors at its annual Senior Day ceremony.

On the field, the Spartans dropped a pair of games to host NYIT by the scores of 7-2 and 4-3 (10-innings) in an East Coast Conference doubleheader. The Spartans will travel to play the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday in the first round of the ECC's double-elimination playoff tournament. The first pitch of Wednesday's match-up with the Purple Knights is set for 3 p.m.

STAC finished the regular season at 24-19 and 14-10 in the conference while NYIT finished 19-22 and 11-13 in the ECC. The Bears clinched the final playoff spot with today's two wins.

STAC Head Coach Kristen Sullivan recognized her eight seniors and presented each of them with a framed, commemorative uniform. The seniors are Colleen Borum (Mountain Top, Pa.), Alyssa Chelak (Poughquag, N.Y.), Alyssa Farr (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Caitlyn Francoeur (East Bridgewater, Mass.), Briana Keaveney (New City, N.Y.), Amanda Leone (Milford, Ct.), Kelcy McGeehan (Bayville, N.J.) and Monica Tran (Caledon, Ontario Canada).

Family members came from as far as California and Ontario to attend the ceremony, which was held indoors at the Spartan Athletics Team Video Room & Lounge due to inclement weather conditions. The seniors helped this year's team tie the 35-year college record of 24 wins and earn its first post-season bid since 2006.

"This was my first recruiting class, so together we've helped build the program back to respectability," said Sullivan. "I'm very proud of each of these players for their contributions to the softball program and their commitment to their education. This is a very impressive group of young women."

Borum was the star of the day for the Spartans by pitching 10 effective innings in the second game. McGeehan played well at third base and centerfielder Melissa Sadler (Milton, N.Y.) made a sensational, over-the-shoulder catch in deep center field. Chelak added three hits on the day.
