Spartans Fall to Mercy in Twin Bill Sweep

Mercy College pitcher Raina Gorman beat the St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball team for the second time this month to lead the Mavericks to a sweep of an East Coast Conference doubleheader on Thursday at Spartan Field. Mercy won by the scores of 8-0 (five innings) and 7-4.

The sweep helped Mercy's push for the conference's fourth and final playoff berth. The Mavericks are now 23-25 overall and 9-13 in the conference. STAC fells to 22-17 and 12-8 in the ECC.

The Spartans dedicated the games to StrikeOut Cancer by wearing commemorative t-shirts in their pre-game warmups and holding a pre-game ceremony in support of on-going breast cancer awareness and research efforts across the globe.

Gorman held STAC to just five hits in a 4-1 win on April 9 and allowed just three hits in this winning effort. Ylannah Bowman's two-run homer in the first inning capped a three-run rally that gave Gorman all of the offensive support she would need.

Amanda Leone (Milford, Ct.) had two hits for the Spartans.

Mercy rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to erase a 4-2 deficit in the second game.

Briana Keaveney (New City, N.Y.) had three hits for STAC.

St. Thomas Aquinas next visits NYIT on Friday in another East Coast Conference doubleheader that starts at 2:30 p.m.
