Sadler Homers Twice, Spartans Sweep Twin Bill From Queens

Melissa Sadler homered twice to power the St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball team to a sweep over Queens College in an East Coast Conference doubleheader Thursday at Spartan Field. STAC won by scores of 4-1 (Final) and 8-0 (Final/5 Innings).

The win vaulted the Spartans into sole possession of second place in the ECC with a 10-4 mark to go along with their overall mark of 19-13. STAC has won nine of its last 12 games. Queens slipped to 1-11 in the conference and 3-20 overall.

Sadler's (Milton, N.Y.) solo homer in the sixth inning delivered an important insurance run after teammate Amanda Leone (Milford, Ct.) had given STAC a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer. It was Leone's fifth homer of the season. Freshman Nicolette MacDonald (Riverdale, N.J.) stole home for the team's final run.

Colleen Borum (Mountain Top, Pa.) and Adrianna Dilal (Rochester, N.Y.) combined to throw a four hitter.

In the second game of the day, STAC jumped to a 1-0 lead on Leone's sacrifice fly to right field in the second inning. In the third inning, Kelcy McGeehan (Bayville, N.J.) doubled home Ashley Landolina (Tolland, Ct.), before Sadler hit a high arching, two-run homer over the left field fence. McGeehan added a two-run single in the fourth inning to finish with three hits and three RBI. Teammate Valerie Winalski (East Granby, Ct.) had two hits and scored a run.

Dilal pitched five shutout innings and struck out seven batters to increase her record to 8-6.

"Missy is playing at a high level now on offense and defense," said STAC Head Coach Kristen Sullivan. "We are playing well and beginning to play with consistency."

St. Thomas Aquinas next hosts LIU Post on Saturday in an East Coast Conference twin bill that starts at noon at Spartan Field.
