Sadler's Walk-Off Homer Propels STAC Past Post in 2019 Home Opener

Melissa Sadler's two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning carried the St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball team to 4-2 win over Post University Thursday in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Spartan Field. Post took the second game, 4-1.

Sadler's dramatic homer capped a furious three-run rally after Post had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning. Alyssa Chelak's sacrifice fly to center field scored Ashley Landolina to tie the score before Sadler lined her game-winning home run over the centerfield fence. It was the first career collegiate homer by Sadler, who returned to the team last weekend after missing the 12-game Florida trip, because she was playing on the college's women's basketball team in the NCAA East Region Tournament.

STAC starting pitcher Colleen Borum turned in another strong performance to increase her record to 6-2. The senior right hander struck out five while scattering six hits. STAC's other run came in the third inning on freshman Amanda Castro's run-scoring single to plate Caitlyn Francoeur.

In the second game, Allyson Wallauer's two-run homer broke open a close game in the sixth inning to lift the Eagles. Castro had given STAC a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a RBI single to left field, the first of two hits for Amanda in the contest. Starting pitcher Adrianna Dilal took the hard luck loss, despite striking out eight and walking none over the course of seven innings pitched.

St. Thomas Aquinas College, now 9-9, next visits LIU Post on Saturday in an ECC doubleheader that begins at noon.
