Spartan Softball Picks Up Sunday Doubleheader Sweep Over Dominican, 7-6 & 10-2

Missy Sadler and Amanda Schweitzer led a 17-run offensive assault that powered St. Thomas Aquinas College to 7-6 and 10-2 victories over visiting Dominican College today in non-conference softball action at Spartan Field. The sweep pushed STAC’s record to 4-2.

Sadler and Schweitzer both hit three-run homers to help STAC build a 7-1 advantage in the first game. Schweitzer’s blast over the centerfield fence came in the first inning and Sadler’s homerun culminated a four-run surge in the fourth inning. Dominican rallied to draw within 7-6 but winning pitcher Carissa Della Vecchia was able to record the final out with the potential game-tying run on second base.

In the second game, STAC erased a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the third inning and five runs in the fourth inning. The Lady Spartans sent nine batters to the plate in both rallies,. Sadler, Kim Astrologo, Jai Santiago and Emilee Mayer all drove in runs in the third inning while Sadler, Astrologo and Mayer followed with RBI hits in the fourth inning. Astrologo finished with three hits and Della Vecchia added a double and triple.  Senior lefty Paige Toothaker won her first game of the season.

“We benefitted from the long ball in the first game,” said STAC Head Coach Kristen Sullivan. “The cold weather and wind were factors today, but the girls maintained their concentration. Paige pitched effectively and our offense had another productive day.”

STAC next hosts Nyack College on Wednesday, March 17 in another non-conference doubleheader that begins at 2:30 p.m.
