STAC Splits Saturday ECC Doubleheader with D'Youville

Sparkill, N.Y. - Winning pitcher Abbie Landrum helped her own cause with a three-run triple to carry St. Thomas Aquinas College to a 4-1 win over D'Youville University today in the first game of an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader at Spartan Field. D'Youville won the second game, 8-7, in eight innings.

Landrum turned in another sterling performance in her outstanding freshman season for the Lady Spartans. The right hander from Buena Park, Calif., erased a 1-0 deficit with a long triple into the left field corner in the fifth inning to score teammates Amanda Schweitzer, Amanda Demmerle and Carissa Della Vecchia. Nikki MacDonald added an insurance run in the following inning. Landrum evened her record at 9-9 and received strong defensive support from MacDonald (shortstop) and Schweitzer (third base).

D'Youville rallied back from a 6-0 deficit to win the second game. Landrum (four hits) and Demmerle (three hits) led the STAC attack with teammates Emilie Mayer (two hits, two RBI), Emilie Olivier (two-run double) and Della Vecchia (three hits, two RBI) also contributing, Della Vecchia struck out 16 batters in seven innings of work.

The twin bill split moved STAC to 12-3 in the ECC and 19-15 overall. DYU is 18-12 overall and 7-9 in the conference.

STAC next travels to Mercy College on Tuesday (April 19) for an ECC doubleheader that begins at 2:30 p.m.
