STAC Softball Opens 2022 Season at East Stroudsburg

Stroudsburg, Pa. - Morgan Chapman and Katie Zaun combined to pitch a perfect game to give East Stroudsburg University a 1-0, eight-inning victory, clinching a doubleheader sweep over St. Thomas Aquinas College Wednesday in non-conference softball at Creekview Park in Stroudsburg, Pa. ESU won the first game, 8-5.

East Stroudsburg pushed across the game's only run in the eighth inning when Katherine Donaghue's infield grounder scored Kaitlyn Cecchin from third base. Chapman and Zaun combined to strike out 11 batters. It was the first perfect game in ESU program history. For STAC, freshman righthander Abbie Landrum allowed only two hits and struck out five batters in her collegiate debut.

In the first game of the day, STAC took a 3-0 lead but ESU scored the next six runs and held on for the win. Amanda Schweitzer's run-scoring double highlighted the STAC offense, while teammates Carissa Della Vecchia (three hits, two runs) and Nicolette MacDonald (two hits) made important contributions. Schweitzer excelled defensively behind the plate in both games.

ESU moved to 4-0 on the season while STAC fell to 0-2. St. Thomas Aquinas next plays March 7 at home in a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Haven that starts at 2:30 p.m.
