STAC Softball Splits Doubleheader with New Haven

Sparkill, N.Y. - Freshman Abbie Landrum hurled a one-hit shutout to earn her first collegiate win in a 3-0 victory over visiting University of New Haven today in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader at Spartan Field in Sparkill, N.Y. New Haven won the second game, 7-6 in extra innings.

Landrum, who hails from Buena Park, Calif., used outstanding control to keep New Haven off balance throughout the game. She finished with four strikeouts. Teammate Kim Astrologo sparkled defensively at second base to support Landrum's strong mound effort. Offensively, STAC scored all three of its runs in the second inning. Freshman Amanda Demmerle's single scored the game's first run and Carissa Della Vecchia stroked a two-run double to left centerfield. Tara Hagan and Amanda Schweitzer added doubles for the Spartans.

The second game featured four lead changes before New Haven was finally able to secure the exciting win in extras. STAC rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 5-2 deficit. In the rally, transfer student Emilie Olivier drove in a key run with a long sacrifice fly and teammates Hagan and Selena Davis scored on wild pitches. After New Haven scored twice in the top of the eighth inning, STAC's Della Vecchia drove in a run with a clutch single to center field, but winning pitcher Selena Aponte was able to work out of a bases loaded jam to register the final out of the game.

Hagan, Olivier and Della Vecchia finished with two hits each.

STAC will kick off its eight-day, 10-game trip to Winter Haven, Fla., on Saturday with games against Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Le Moyne College.
