STAC Softball Continues Impressive Stretch, Taking Two from Queens College, 7-0 & 6-3

Sparkill, N.Y. - Freshman Abbie Landrum's shutout pitching and an offense that rapped out 21 hits powered St. Thomas Aquinas College to a doubleheader sweep over Queens College today in East Coast Conference softball action at Spartan Field. 

STAC won the first game, 7-0, behind Landrum's exceptional pitching and then registered a 6-3 victory in the second game. The sweep upped the Lady Spartans' overall record to 16-13 and 9-1 in the ECC. STAC has won 12 of its last 15 games.

In the first game, the Lady Spartans rallied for four runs in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie. Emilie Olivier and Amanda Castro drove in runs with singles and Amanda Schweitzer followed with a two-run double. Olivier knocked in two more runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Amanda Demmerle finished with two hits and two runs scored. Landrum recorded her seventh win and third shutout of the season. Shortstop Nicolette MacDonald backed her with excellent defense.

In the second game, STAC erased an early 2-0 deficit with a four-run rally in the second inning and then added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. Olivier and Emilee Mayer had two hits and MacDonald and Landrum drove in key runs. Della Vecchia was the winning pitcher with 13 strikeouts.

STAC next meets Molloy College on Tuesday (April 12) in an ECC doubleheader that starts at 3 p.m. in Rockville Center.
