Olivier, Della Vecchia Power STAC To Two Wins At Molloy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Home runs by Emilie Olivier and Carissa Della Vecchia helped St. Thomas Aquinas College to two wins over Molloy University today in a rare East Coast Conference softball tripleheader at Bob Klein Field in Rockville Centre, N.Y.

Olivier's walkoff home run in the bottom of the 12th inning propelled STAC to a 2-1 win in the resumption of a game on April 4 suspended due to darkness. In the first game of the regularly scheduled doubleheader, Della Vecchia's solo home run in the seventh inning accounted for the deciding run in a 7-6 victory. In the last game of the tripleheader, Molloy registered an 8-0 win.

The two wins helped STAC pick up a game in the conference standings and its 13-5 record puts them one game in the loss column behind first place Molloy, who is now 12-4. STAC is 26-16 overall and Molloy is 26-18 overall.

The suspended game was resumed in the ninth inning and Olivier's homer over the right field fence gave STAC the win. Della Vecchia tossed four scoreless innings to finish with a three hitter.

In STAC's other win, the Spartans sent nine batters to the plate in a four-run second inning rally. Freshman DeAnna DeCaro's two-run single and classmate Elyse Marcano's run-producing single highlighted the surge. Eliana Raposo and Olivier drove in runs in the fourth inning before Della Vecchia homered in the seventh inning to give STAC a 7-5 lead. STAC relief pitcher Abbie Landrum got the final two outs of the game with the potential tying run on third base to clinch the win.

Junior Tara Hagan finished with three hits and Adriana Coira drove in two runs. Marcano starred defensively by throwing out the potential tying run at home in the sixth inning.

STAC next hosts Queens College on Saturday (April 29) in a ECC doubleheader that will begin at noon. The team's seniors will be recognized in a pregame ceremony.
