STAC Splits Doubleheader with Mercy; Hagan Collects 100th Career hit

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - Freshman Nayah Diaz drove in the winning run with a ninth-inning single to vault St. Thomas Aquinas College to a 7-6 win over host Mercy University today in the first game of an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader. Mercy won the second game, 5-4.

The split moved STAC's conference record to 10-2 and 22-18 overall. Mercy finished the day at 11-23 and 5-11 in the ECC. Earlier today, STAC was named as one of 10 teams under consideration for the first East Region rankings that will be released next week. The rankings are used to determine the at-large bids to the post-season tournament.

Diaz's decisive single to left field gave the Spartans a hard-fought win that was highlighted by Sarah Clancy's tenacious pitching through cold and rainy conditions. The senior righthander went the distance and finished with nine strikeouts to post her 11th win in 20 decisions. Eliana Raposo homered and Elyse Marcano had three hits and scored twice to pace the offense. Raposo also made a diving catch in left-centerfield with the potential game-tying run on base for the game's final out.

In the second game, Tara Hagan became the 32nd player in STAC program history to record 100 career hits. The graduate of nearby Clarkstown South High School reached the milestone with a single in the fourth inning. She finished with two hits in the game and freshman teammate Olivia Leon contributed two hits and three RBI.

STAC next hosts D'Youville University on Friday, April 19 in an ECC doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m. at Spartan Field.
