Homers by Raposo, Leon Help STAC Sweep CSI on Senior Day

Sparkill, N.Y. - Winning pitcher Eliana Raposo and freshman Olivia Leon slammed home runs to power St. Thomas Aquinas College to an 11-3 win and a sweep of an East Coast Conference doubleheader against the College of Staten Island today at Spartan Field. STAC won the first game, 5-3.

The pair of victories gave STAC sole possession of first place in the ECC with a 15-3 record and an overall mark of 28-20. CSI fell to 6-12 in the ECC and 14-30 overall.

STAC honored Sarah Clancy, Tara Hagan, Amanda Demmerle and Kaitlyn Tudico in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony.

Raposo surrendered three runs in the first inning, but then settled down and combined with reliever Clancy to hold CSI scoreless the rest of the way. Raposo's team-leading homer in the first inning got the comeback going and the Spartans took the lead with a five-run surge in the second inning. Elyse Marcano's two-run double gave STAC the lead before Raposo knocked in another run with a sacrifice fly and Leon doubled in a run to extend STAC's lead to 6-3. In the sixth inning, Raposo drove in her fourth run of the game with a double to left field and Leon followed with a long, two-run homer to left field to lengthen the lead to 11-3 and end the game on the 8-run mercy rule.

Aliya Feerick added three hits for the winners and Demmerle stole her 16th base of the season. Earlier in the season, she broke the program record for career steals.

In the first game, the Spartans sent 11 batters to the plate in an exciting five-run, third inning rally. Hagan's single plated the first run and Leon followed with a run-producing double. Freshman Nayah Diaz then ripped a two-strike, two-run single to left field and fellow freshman Aliya Feerick followed with a successful squeeze bunt to score the fifth and final run. Winning pitcher Clancy thwarted late-game rallies by CSI to post her ECC-leading 15th win of the year. She struck out eight batters. Feerick (right field) and Raposo (center field) sparkled with their gloves.

STAC next hosts Molloy University on Sunday (April 28) in an important ECC doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
