Raposo's Hitting, Clancy's Pitching Carries STAC to Doubleheader Sweep of Mercy

Sparkill, N.Y. - Eliana Raposo homered in both games and Sarah Clancy registered a win and save to lead St. Thomas Aquinas College to 2-1 and 3-2 wins over Mercy University today in an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader at Spartan Field.

Raposo, who has been named the ECC Player of the Week for the last two weeks, continued her exceptional all-around play. The sophomore hit a solo homer and stole a base in the first game and followed with more heroics in the second game. With STAC trailing 2-0, she slammed a long, three-run home run to deliver the game-deciding runs and also pitched five effective innings. She is now hitting .418 on the season.

Clancy pitched a six-hitter in the first game to lift her record to 5-8. She struck out a season-high eight batters and benefited from strong defense by right fielder Aliya Feerick. In the second game, she entered the game in the sixth inning and got the final six outs of the game to notch her second save and preserve the win for Spartans.

The Spartans had other stars in the two wins. Jessica Feerick's homer was the difference in the first game win and teammate Elyse Marcano extended her consecutive game hit streak to 11 games with hits in both games. She also threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the fourth inning of the second game. Junior Amanda Demmerle had two hits in the second game.

The two wins moved STAC's conference record to 3-1 and 12-14 overall. Mercy fell to 0-4 in the ECC and 4-14. STAC next travels to Buffalo on Friday to face D'Youville University in an ECC doubleheader that will begin at noon.
