Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Junior Trinadey Santiago's two-run shot to left field in the fifth inning broke open a one-run game, as St. Thomas Aquinas College beat Molloy University, 6-2 on Friday afternoon in the second game of an East Coast Conference softball doubleheader at the RVC Sports Complex. Molloy won the first game, 4-2.
STAC moves to 16-15 overall and 4-2 in ECC action, while Molloy goes to 11-19 and 6-2.
In the second game, the Spartans built an early 2-0 lead in the second innning on a 2 RBI single by Elyse Marcano, which scored both Adriana Coira and Olivia Leon. However, Molloy answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to knot things at 2-2. Sophia Marella's run scoring single, plating Eliana Raposo and Santiago's homer put the Spartans back ahead at 5-2 in the fifth. Leon would cap the scoring with an RBI double, bringing in pinch runner Brigid O'Sullivan to make it a 6-2 game.
Madison Puppolo (W, 8-5) was stellar once again in the circle for the maroon and gold. Puppolo allowed an earned run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Sarah Clancy (L, 8-8) pitched well in the first game but was out dueled by Molloy's Natalie Moussa. The visiting Spartans built 1-0 first inning advantage on the strength of an Eliana Raposo solo home run, but the Lions would answer in the second with a two-run blast of their own to take a one-run lead. An Olivia Leon RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, scored pinch runner Nayah Diaz to tie things at 2-2. However, the hosts from Long Island would go on to add a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead and the victory.
Clancy surrendered four runs on five hits, with a walk and four punchouts over six innings.
STAC next meets Queens College on Sunday (April 6) in an ECC twin bill that starts at 12:00 pm at Spartan Field.
