Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball program celebrated one milestone achievement pregame, and almost had another to write in its record books in the circle on Tuesday at Spartan Field. Pitcher Sarah Clancy carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, before it was broken up by a one-out single to center field, as STAC went on to shutout crosstown rivals, Dominican University 4-0.
STAC improves to 15-14 on the season, while Dominican drops to 8-19.
Prior to the contest between the Spartans and Chargers, the St. Thomas Aquinas College community honored Head Coach Kristen Sullivan for reaching the 300 career win mark with on-field ceremonies which included the Coach Sullivan's family, friends, former teammates, her team and college administration.
Once the teams hit the field, it was the outstanding pitching of Sarah Clancy that would be the story as the left-hander went the distance for the maroon and gold, allowing just the seventh inning base hit while walking one and striking out two.
At the plate, STAC scratched across a first inning run, courtesy of an RBI double to center field by Eliana Raposo which brought home Maristella Coira to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Spartans tacked on three more runs, with some help from the Dominican University defense, to go up 4-0. An Olivia Leon single to right field, along with a two-base error by the right fielder, scored Adriana Coira and left Leon standing on third base to make it 2-0. Then, Elyse Marcano reached first base on an overthrow by the third baseman which brought home Leon to increase the lead to 3-0 and put Marcano at third base herself. Finally, to close out the scoring, a high throw back to mound from the catcher sent the ball rolling toward second base and Marcano to the plate to put St. Thomas Aquinas ahead 4-0.
STAC returns to action on Friday, April 4 at Molloy University. The Spartans and Lions will battle it out in an East Coast Conference doubleheader, with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the RVC Sports Complex on Long Island.
