STAC Softball Evens Its Record at 11-11 With Sweep of Franklin Pierce

Sparkill, N.Y. - Behind the pitching of Sarah Clancy and Madison Puppolo, St. Thomas Aquinas scored 4-2 and 8-5 wins over visiting Franklin Pierce University on Sunday in non-conference softball action at Spartan Field.

The doubleheader sweep helped the Spartans even its record at 11-11. They have won 10 of their last 11 games. Franklin Pierce fell to 11-9.

The excellent play of preseason East Coast Conference Player of the Year Eliana Raposo helped STAC build a 4-0 lead in the first game. Raposo singled in teammate Maristella Coira to open the scoring and then scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. Raposo and Sofia Marella both scored on wild pitches in the third inning. STAC managed only three hits but was helped by nine walks by Franklin Pierce pitchers.

That was all that Clancy needed to post her fifth win in 11 decisions. The righty struck out seven while spacing seven hits.

In the nightcap, the Spartans collected nine hits with Trinadey Santiago pacing the attack with a homer, two runs and two RBI. Marella and Raposo had two hits apiece. Adriana Coira scored twice, stole two bases and knocked in a run. Puppolo went the distance to increase her record to 6-3.

STAC next welcomes Mercy University to Spartan Field, as the ECC-portion of their schedule gets underway on Tuesday, March 25. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
