Sparkill, N.Y. - Sarah Clancy's outstanding pitching, combined with a complete team effort at the plate and on the bases, allowed St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball to claim a home doubleheader sweep over Queens College on Sunday afternoon at Spartan Field. STAC won 8-0 in five innings and 7-3.
The Spartans improve to 18-15 overall and 6-2 in ECC play, while the Knights drop to 6-18 and 2-6.
In the opener, the maroon and gold put together a five-run first inning as Sofia Marella crushed a three-run homer off of the right field foul pole, followed by Adriana Coira's RBI double, combined with some excellent base running and poor defense which allowed both Jessica Feerick and Coira to score.
A run scoring single by Eliana Raposo brought home Elyse Marcano in the second to make it 6-0, with an RBI double by Adriana Coira and an RBI single by Olivia Leon plating Aliya Feerick and Coira respectively to extend the Spartans' advantage to 8-0 in the fifth inning, which is where the game concluded.
Sarah Clancy (W, 9-8) allowed just four hits in five innings of work, with a strikeout to pick up the win.
Game two started off shaky for the hosts, as Queens went up 2-0 in the first inning. However, STAC cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame via a Trinadey Santiago RBI double which scored Elyse Marcano to make it 2-1. The Knights tacked on another run in the second to make it 3-1, but the maroon and gold tied the game and then took the lead in the next half inning with Eliana Raposo first clubbing a two-run single, scoring both Maristella Coira and Aliya Feerick followed by another 2 RBI single from Sofia Marella, scoring teammates Marcano and Raposo to put St. Thomas Aquinas ahead 5-3.
Jessica Feerick's 2 RBI double in the fifth, brought home Trinadey Santiago and Adriana Coira to give the Spartans a couple of insurance runs, and made it a 7-3 game.
Madison Puppolo got the start in the second game and lasted just three and a third innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits with a walk and three Ks to pick up a no-decision. Sarah Clancy (W, 10-8) made her second appearance of the day, this one in relief of Puppolo. Clancy was once again stellar in the circle, allowing three hits while striking out three over three and two-thirds innings to earn another victory.
STAC hosts the College of Staten Island on Thursday, April 10 for an ECC doubleheader at Spartan Field that gets underway starting at 2:00 p.m.
