Spartan Football Opens Season With 30-7 Win Over Post Eagles

HILLBURN, N.Y. - The lid lifter on the St. Thomas Aquinas College sprint football program was a successful one Saturday night at Torne Valley Sports Complex, as the Spartans put up points in all three phases of the game en route to a 30-7 triumph over visiting Post University.

STAC (1-0) opened the scoring 8:40 into their existence when Brian Hammerman drilled a 20-yard field goal to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage.

The Spartans built their lead to 16-0 by halftime, following a 7-yard touchdown pass just into the second quarter from Luke Sullivan (14-for-24, 2 TD, INT, 163 yards; 6 rushes, 18 yds.) to Ricky James, before the former's pass to the back-right corner of the end zone found Javaughn Anderson from 19 yards out less than eight seconds before the intermission.

STAC's defense dialed up a score less than six seconds into the third quarter, when Kyle Teneyck fell on a fumble recovery in the Post (0-1) end zone after a strip by Tyreke Smith to push the Spartans edge to 23-0.

Sullivan capped STAC's scoring midway through the fourth frame when he scampered in from 10 yards away.

The Spartans converted 4-of-5 chances in the red zone on the evening, while the defense limited the Eagles to 134 yards of total offense. STAC also forced six fumbles by the visitors.

Carlos Fernandez rushed five times for a team-best 34 yards for STAC, while Anderson reeled in four passes from Sullivan for 55 yards. Defensively, Tyreke Smith and Will Smith (two assisted tackles) had seven solo tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss apiece, while Teneyck had 1.5 sacks.

Head coach Matt Barry's Spartans will take to the road for the first time in program history Saturday night (Sept. 22), when they face off with Caldwell University in a 7 p.m. kick-off.
