Spartan Sprint Football Rolls to 37-0 Victory over Alderson Broaddus

Hillburn, N.Y. – Dennis Riordan completed eleven of his fifteen pass attempts in a four-touchdown effort to lead the St. Thomas Aquinas College Sprint Football team to a 37-0 victory over Alderson Broaddus University on Saturday afternoon at the Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn. 

Spartan Nation would also come together to celebrate on this first weekend of October, as the college welcomed back its alumni for Homecoming Weekend, while the Athletic Department recognized the dedication and unwavering support shown to our student-athletes by the college's employees with Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day.

 

STAC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

  • Mahki Matthews led the way with 74 yards receiving and two touchdowns, including a 43-yard TD reception.
  • Bo Maroney had eight rushes for 39 yards and a touchdown on the afternoon.
  • Tyreke Smith was a defensive powerhouse for the Spartans, picking up 16 total tackles on the day (12 solo & 4 assisted), while 7 tackles were for a loss of 46 total yards.
  • Starting quarterback Dennis Riordan completed 11 of 15 passes, for 183 yards and four touchdowns.
  • The Spartan defense core compiled 70 total tackles, five forced fumbles, one interception and 11 sacks in their dominate win over Alderson Broaddus.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

 
Second Quarter

  • Dennis Riordan would hook up with Luke McKenna on a 30-yard TD pass in the second quarter to put the Spartans ahead by three scores at 21-0.
  • Mahki Matthews' first of two touchdowns on the day would come via a 23-yard pass from Riordan to give St. Thomas Aquinas a four score lead, 28-0, at the half.

 
Third Quarter

  • No scoring, but plenty of back and forth action between the teams was the theme in third quarter, with Alderson Broaddus desperately trying to get themselves onto the scoreboard, but the Spartans would have non of it, as the game remained 28-0.

 
Fourth Quarter

  • Dennis Riordan would find Mahki Matthews in the endzone for his second TD of the game, this one a 43-yard strike to push the STAC lead to 35-0.
  • The Spartans would seal the victory when Tyreke Smith would take down AB's Douglas Devinney in the back of the endzone for a safety to make it 37-0.

St. Thomas Aquinas looks to make it back-to-back wins on a short week, as the Spartans host Mansfield University on Friday, October 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
