Hillburn, N.Y. – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Sprint Football team suffered a 20-6 defeat at the hands of the Caldwell University Cougars on Friday evening at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Caldwell improved its record to 4-1 and 2-0 in the CSFL North, while STAC drops to 1-4 and 0-3 within the North Division.
STAC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Hassan Blakney led the way with five receptions for 73 yards, with his longest grab being a 30-yard touchdown catch.
- Christopher Jones registered 9 total tackles (6 solo, 6 assist) in the game. Teammates Erick Campbell (2) and Kasey Sullivan (1) recorded the three interceptions for the Spartans defense.
- Starting quarterback Ryan Kenny returned from injury and completed 13 of 32 passes, for 141 yards, while throwing a touchdown and an interception. Kenny also had 10 rush attempts.
- St. Thomas Aquinas College welcomed back its Alumni for the game, as the college kicked off "Homecoming Weekend".
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- No Scoring, but back and forth action between the teams, resulting in four drives for Caldwell and three for STAC.
Second Quarter
- A Jared Montoya 21-yard TD pass from Cougars QB Frank DeMaio put the visitors up 7-0 with just under five minutes to go before halftime.
- Donovan Swasey's 9-yard catch in the endzone on a DeMaio strike gave Caldwell a 13-0 advantage in the final seconds of the stanza.
Third Quarter
- Devon Turner's 3-yard scamper across the goal line, late in the quarter extended the visitor's lead to 20-0.
Fourth Quarter
- Hassan Blakney broke the shutout for the Spartans midway through the final frame on a 30-yard reception from Ryan Kenny to make it 20-6.
