The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team beat Chestnut Hill, 72-62 on the road. Junior Theresa Dowling went 5-6 from the floor and 3-4 from behind the arc finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
STAC got off to a 14-6 run with Dowling and senior Colleen Vogel leading the way with five points each. Both teams exchanged baskets for a few possessions before the Lady Spartans pushed their lead to thirteen behind a layup by freshman Bianca Kowgios with 8:34 remaining in the first half. Kowgios finished with 13 points and a career high 5 assists. Dowling stole the ball late in the half and scored a layup to give STAC a 37-23 lead which they took into the break.
The Lady Spartans maintained a double digit lead until Jessica Pruiti hit a jumper at 14:41 to make it 47-38. The Griffins went on a 7-3 run to close the gap to five, 50-45. Freahman Leane Urbancik answered with a three point play to extend STAC's lead back to eight with 8:52 left in the game. A jumper by Shpresa Liharevic and a layup by Vogel pushed STAC's lead back to eleven but the Griffins would not go away quietly. Freshman Lindsay Alexander hit a three to bring the Griffins within five, with 2:39 remaining but Dowling drained her third three of the game followed by a pair of free throws from Vogel and Briana Sloper to keep them out of reach.
Vogel finished with 16 points shooting 5-11 from the field and Sloper added 13 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore Sylvia Davis had a career high 8 assists to go with her 3 points and 4 steals in twenty minutes of action.
The Lady Spartans will be back in action on December 30th as they travel to Gannon University for their final non-conference game.
