Strong Second Half Pushes Pioneers Past Lady Spartans

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team lost, 71-53 at C.W. Post yesterday afternoon.  Sophomore Sylvia Davis had 16 points shooting 4-6 from behind the arc. 

After a balanced attack where neither team lead by more then two in the first half, C.W. Post went into the locker room up, 25-23.  Davis paced STAC with 11 points while freshman Bianca Kowgios added 6. 

Kowgios hit a jumper to start the second half tying the game, 25-25.  The home team responded with a 5-0 run before senior Colleen Vogel answered with a 3-pointer bringing STAC within two at the 17:43 mark.  The Pioneers rattled off a 12-0 run over a three minute span to open the game to, 42-28 with 14:05 remaining. A made free throw by Davis, followed by a 3-pointer from Shpresa Liharevic and a layup from Briana Sloper brought STAC to within ten, 44-34 with 12:09 left.  The Lady Spartans were unable to bring the game any closer as Post shot 53.3% (16-30)for the half. 

Junior Janea Aiken had 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals for the Pioneers.  Felicia Joyner and Gina Catherall added 19 and 10 points respectively.  Alyssa Lombardi had a game high 12 rebounds as Post held a strong advantage on the glass, 46-34 including 16 offensive rebounds. 

The Lady Spartans will be back in action on Monday as they travel to the University of Bridgeport for a 5 PM game.
