The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team lost at Dowling, 76-62. Freshman Shpresa Liharevic had 12 points to pace STAC while Briana Sloper added 11 points and 5 rebounds. Colleen Vogel had 9 points and shot 3-5 from behind the arc.
The Golden Lions opened the game on a 15-5 run. Dowling extended their lead to twelve behind a layup by Kasonna Samms with 5:48 left in the half. STAC finished the half on a 14-8 run to close within six as Liharevic drained a three just before the buzzer.
Dowling's Christie Marrone opened the second half with a pair of three pointers along with four points from freshman Seja Gamble to push their lead back to eleven, 42-31. A three pointer by freshman Bianca Kowgios brought STAC within eight with 16:08 left in the game. Dowling responded with another basket from Samms and would not let the Lady Spartans get any closer as they maintained a double digit lead for the remainder of the game. Marrone finished with 21 points and shot 5-10 from behind the arc. Gamble had 14 points shooting 6-7 from the floor. Kowgios finished with 7 points and 4 steals for STAC.
STAC will be back in action on Saturday as they host Mercy College at 1 PM.
