Lady Spartans Upset Bridgeport, 73-51

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team upset top seeded University of Bridgeport, 73-51.  Briana Sloper had 24 points while Theresa Dowling added 18 points and 9 rebounds.  Sylvia Davis had a career high 16 assists to go along with her 9 points and 4 steals.

The Lady Spartans fell behind early as the Purple Knights started the game on a 16-8 run in the first five minutes.  However, STAC pushed a 10-0 run of their own to take an 18-16 lead behind a three pointer by Dowling.  The Lady Spartans received key steals by Davis and freshman Bianca Kowgios to help spark the run.  Bridgeport's Sidney Parsons tied the game with a jumper in the paint before Dowling drained another three to give the Lady Spartans back the lead and they never trailed again.

Senior Colleen Vogel scored five of her eleven points in the closing minutes of the first half to give STAC a 38-31 lead at the break.  Sloper opened the second half with six points to keep STAC ahead 44-35.  The Purple Knight's Emma Beddome made two free throws to bring them within seven, 44-37.  The Purple Knights did not score a field goal for the next six minutes as STAC took a 61-41 lead with 9:10 left in the game.

STAC outrebounded Bridgeport, 32-21.  Sloper and freshman Aysha Williams added 5 rebounds for the Lady Spartans.  Kowgios had 6 assists and 2 steals for STAC.  Parsons along with Ana-Marie Kammer each had 10 points for the Purple Knights.

STAC will return to action on Saturday as the host Queens for a 1 PM tip.
