The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team beat Mercy, 67-58. Freshman Shpresa Liharevic scored 16 points and Theresa Dowling added 13 points and 3 rebounds.
STAC went on a 16-4 run to close out the first half and take a 36-28 lead into the break. Liharevic had ten points during the run behind back to back layups and two 3-pointers. STAC continued to build on their lead as Kim Vareles knocked down a short jumper to open the half. Senior Colleen Vogel drained a three to give the Lady Spartans their largest lead, 48-34 with 15:34 remaining. Vogel finished with 11 points and 5 steals.
Freshman Leane Urbancik scored a layup with 7:49 making the score 60-46. The Lady Spartans did not score another field goal as Mercy continued to fight coming within six, 60-54 with 4:01 remaining on the clock. Sylvia Davis went 5-6 from the foul line in the final minutes of action and Liharevic knocked down two free throws as the Lady Spartans secured the win. Davis finished with 10 points, 6 assists and 4 steals.
The Lady Spartans outrebounded Mercy 43-40. Sophomore Briana Sloper had 13 rebounds to go with her 8 points. The Lady Spartans will be back in action on Saturday as the host C.W. Post for a 1 PM game.
