Lady Spartans Fall to Bridgeport, 72-59

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team dropped their final regular season game, 72-59 at Bridgeport.  Freshman Leane Urbancik had a career high 17 points to pace STAC while rookie Sophie Bertrand added 13 points and 2 steals.

Freshman Shpresa Liharevic hit a jumper with 12:11 on the clock to tie the score at 9-9.  Bridgeport's Ana-Marie Kammer scored a layup to regain the lead before Liharevic made two free throws to even the score for the third time in the half.  Bertrand hit a three pointer at the 8:48 mark to give STAC its first lead of the game, 16-15.  Sophomore Natalie Catavero drained a three to bring STAC within four, 25-21 with 5:41 remaining in the half.  The Purple Knights went on a 12-5 run to close the half including 7-8 from the free throw line. 

Senior Colleen Vogel opened the half with a three to bring STAC within eight, 37-29.  Urbancik scored a layup and made two free throws a possession later to keep STAC within seven. Urbancik continued to put points on the board for the Lady Spartans down the strecth keeping the game within reach.  Bertrand hit another three with 10:52 on the clock to as STAC closed with six, 51-45.  Briana Sloper made a layup with 7:44 remaining to bring STAC within five, 54-49 but the Lady Spartans could not get any closer. 

Bridgeport was led by Emma Beddome and Kammer who scored 19 and 15 points respectively.  Theresa Dowling added 9 points and 7 rebounds for STAC.  Urbancik added 5 rebounds and 2 assists while Bianca Kowgios had 4 assists. 

The Lady Spartans will travel to Dowling for the first round of the ECC playoffs on Wednesday.  Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
